| My name is Marloes Duyker, I am 32 years old and I live and work as an illustrator in the city of Utrecht, the Netherlands. For five years I have been making fabricated illustrations with my favorite tool: the sewing machine. I am now working for a variety of clients: magazines, banks, books, fashion designers and more. The images are often used for editorial purposes. My work can be described als an infinite fusion of illustrative design, art and fashion. Apart from illustrating, I also give lectures and advise students. During my study at the School of Arts in Utrecht, I was stimulated to experiment with all kinds of unconventional materials and use them in a book, called the ‘Image-traveller’s Book’. I created an appetite for these kinds experiments and started exploring all kinds of ways to create images, like drawing with light and shadows. One day my mother had been using the sewing machine and I saw what could be an interesting device to make images. At first it was very clumsy and I broke quite some needles teaching myself to sow, but in the end I was excited by the results. The created images were very fragile, both abstract and figurative; A refreshing and exciting new approach to create an image. Collages made out of all kind of materials can be made, varying from using spray paint, photographs, latex, thin pieces of metal and much more, about everything that can be used on the sewing machine. The sewing machine is quite crude if it is used in the way I do. I use this to my advantage. It gives my work spontaneity. Sometimes the machine makes mistakes; I call them beauties of imperfection or coincidence, they make the image lively. I also mostly leave ‘waste’ threads for the same purpose. Another n interesting advantage ia that two images are created at the same time. The second image, at the back:A counterimage with colours randomly used, is created unconsciously and therefore becomes a visual surprise. In some cases I flip the image to continue working on the backside. You can say the piece lives a doublelife. I prefer making images which have an open and sketchlike character, so there is room for the viewer to experience his/her own adventure in the artwork. The pieces I make are usually small. The reason is quite simple; I can’t use big pieces of fabrics on my sewing machine. If I try to make bigger pieces, there is a chance that the fragile line loses its strength. |
